The Russian Language Centre at HSE University offers Russian language programmes for foreigners who plan to study, live, or work in Russia. The Centre specialises in teaching Russian as a foreign language to international students and adult learners with different language goals.
Designed for international students, foreign professionals, and foreigners relocating to Russia, our Russian language programmes cover every key language skill: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They are suitable for learners at all proficiency levels.
Students can learn Russian through our offline courses in Nizhny Novgorod, which provide an immersive campus experience, or opt for our online Russian courses, accessible to learners internationally. These virtual lessons are interactive and taught by experienced teachers.

Yes. Several courses are designed specifically for those at an A0 proficiency level (A0 level) and do not require any prior knowledge of Russian.
Yes. Online Russian courses are available for students worldwide and are delivered through live interactive lessons with experienced instructors. The lessons might be in person or in a group. It depends on the programme.
Generally, all staff and professors speak English and support our students while they are in Russia. As for the lessons, at beginner levels, professors use English as a support language to explain grammar and instructions. Students may ask questions in English too. As students progress, classes gradually shift toward Russian-only communication to help learners adapt to real-life language use more effectively.
For beginners, reaching B1 level usually requires long-term, structured study. Our General Russian Language Course is designed to help students progress from A0 to B1 over a 9-month period.
Yes, a visa is required for offline study in Russia. All courses offer visa and academic support for international students.
Yes. Students who successfully complete a course receive an HSE Certificate confirming their level and programme completion.
Intensive courses focus on faster progress over a shorter period of time, while general programmes offer gradual, long-term language development. Students can apply for the Intensive Russian Language Course at any time during a year. If students complete the course successfully, they can master Russian at the next language level with another group. Applying for the General Russian Language Course is accessible only at the beginning of the academic year (September-October).
